Performing Arts Course Information Sheets

2023-24:  Acting 1

Course Description: In this class, students will learn the techniques of stage production including pantomime and movement, voice, improvisation, character, writing, stage combat, and performance. This class will analyze and perform Dramatic Repertoire in a variety of genres from different periods in history. Students will work on staging, script analysis, and elements of theatre production. This class is open to all students without audition and is appropriate for multiple levels of acting experience.
 

2023-24:   Acting 2 & 3

Course Description: In this class, students will focus specifically on acting technique as it applies to movement, character, script, improvisation, script writing, etc. in Dramatic Repertoire across a variety of genres from antiquity to the present. Students will also focus on play production as a whole – directing, producing, designing, etc. This class is designed for the student interested in serious study of the theatrical arts.
 

2023-24:  Advanced Jazz Dance

Course Description: Advanced Jazz Dance is one of the four classes that makes up MVHS' student centered dance program, Dance Spectrum. It is an advanced level course for students in 9th through 12th grade. The dance styles learned throughout this course will include jazz, hip hop, contemporary, ballet, and modern dance. These genres are studied and then performed in student choreographed pieces at the end of each semester. This group travels some years.

2023-24:  A Cappella 

Course Description: In this choir you will learn the techniques of vocal production, choral singing, ensemble skills and choral expression. The choir sings in 3-4 part harmony in a variety of genre from different periods in history. The choir performs at school concerts, local community events and travels internally annually. This choir performs in 10+ concerts a year. Students will work on intonation, tone production, tone quality, breathing, diction, articulation, phrasing and increasing range. Students will also learn music reading, related music history, and the study of harmony. This class is audition based, fast paced, and musically very challenging, Students must be able to hold their own vocal line, one on a part, in 3 part harmony, sing scales and intervals with accurate pitch and demonstrate advanced stage presence before entering this class.
 
 

2023-24 Chamber Choir

Course Description: In this choir you will learn the techniques of vocal production, choral singing, ensemble skills and choral expression. The choir sings in 3-4 part harmony in a variety of genre from different periods in history. The choir performs at school concerts, local community events and travels internally annually. This choir performs in 10+ concerts a year. Students will work on intonation, tone production, tone quality, breathing, diction, articulation, phrasing and increasing range. Students will also learn music reading, related music history, and the study of harmony. This class is open to all students without audition. Although beginners are welcome it moves at a fast pace and is appropriate for multiple levels of choral experience.

2023-24:  Chamber Orchestra

Course Description: Chamber Orchestra is designed as a very advanced course for 11th through 12th grade musicians playing appropriate string instruments. All genres of traditional and contemporary music are studied and performed at several concerts and festivals during the year.

2023-24: Concert Choir

Course Description: In this choir you will learn the techniques of vocal production, choral singing, ensemble skills and choral expression. The choir sings in 3-4 part harmony in a variety of genre from different periods in history. The choir performs at school concerts, local community events and travels annually. This choir performs in 10+ concerts a year. Students will work on intonation, tone production, tone quality, breathing, diction, articulation, phrasing and increasing range. Students will also learn music reading, related music history, and the study of harmony. 2022-23:  Introduction to Music

Course Description: Introduction to Music is designed for beginning musicians to learn an instrument. Students will try different instruments that are traditional to band and orchestra ensembles. Then students will select the instrument of choice to further progress in their performance skills. 

2023-24:  Intermediate Dance

Course Description: Intermediate Dance is designed as an intermediate course for 9th through 12th grade in the areas of contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and modern. These genres are studied and performed at several concerts during the year. This group may or may not travel.

2023-24:  Jazz Dance

 
Course Description:  Jazz Dance is one of the five classes that makes up MVHS' student centered dance program, Dance Spectrum. This course is designed for students in 9th through 12th grade. The dance styles learned throughout this course will include hip hop, jazz, ballet, and world dance. These genres are studied and then performed in student choreographed pieces at the end of each semester.

2023-24:  Madrigals

In this choir you will learn the techniques of vocal production, choral singing, ensemble skills and choral expression.  The choir sings in 4-8 part harmony in a variety of genre from different periods in history.  The choir performs at school concerts, local community events and travels internally annually.  This choir performs in 75+ concerts a year, 40 of which fall in the last month of the first semester.  Students will work on intonation, tone production, tone quality, breathing, diction, articulation, phrasing and increasing range.  Students will also learn music reading, related music history, and the study of harmony.  This class is audition based, fast paced, and musically very challenging,  Students must be able to hold their own vocal line, one on a part, in 6 part harmony, sing scales and intervals with accurate pitch and demonstrate advanced stage presence before entering this class.

2023-24:  Marching Band

A competitive field Marching Band open to all performers. Prior musical or dance experience is recommended but not necessary for Winds, Percussion, and Color Guard. During the first quarter this class meets during zero period on Wednesdays and after school on Mondays and Thursdays. Some Saturdays during the fall require attendance for rehearsals and all-day competitions. Summer training available for Color Guard and Percussion. Participation in “Spartan Sound” (Pep Band) is expected for all performers.

2023-24:  Stagecraft 1 & 2

Course Description: This is a class designed to teach the art of stagecraft to students who are interested in design, construction, painting, lighting, sound, management, and the many other forms of expression in this field. Each student will come to understand the fundamentals of stagecraft through lecture, demonstration and project assignments. This class will also be responsible for running and maintaining the theatre complex for the other performing arts disciplines, the school, and the community.
 

2023-24:  String Orchestra

String Orchestra  is designed as both a performing class and a training group. Musicians of all levels are welcome to participate. Older students may take this course to practice and develop their leadership skills.

Symphonic Band is designed as both a performing class and a training group. Musicians of all levels are welcome to participate. Older students may take this course to practice and develop their leadership skills.

2023-24:  Symphony Orchestra

Course Description: Symphony Orchestra combines musicians from both Orchestras and Concert Bands that focuses on large-scale works composed for full orchestra. Symphony Orchestra meets one afternoon per week during the Spring Semester.

2023-24:  Volare

In this choir you will learn the techniques of vocal production, choral singing, ensemble skills and choral expression.  The choir sings in 3-6 part harmony in a variety of genre from different periods in history.  The choir performs at school concerts, local community events and travels internally annually.  This choir performs in 20 concerts a year.  Students will work on intonation, tone production, tone quality, breathing, diction, articulation, phrasing and increasing range.  Students will also learn music reading, related music history, and the study of harmony.  This class is audition based, fast paced, and musically very challenging,  Students must be able to hold their own vocal line, one on a part, in 4 part harmony, sing scales and intervals with accurate pitch and demonstrate advanced stage presence before entering this class.

2023-24:  Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is designed as an advanced band for 10th-12th grade musicians playing appropriate band instruments. All genres of traditional and contemporary music are studied and performed at several concerts and festivals during the year.

2022-23:  World Dance

Course Description: Dance is a course designed for 9th through 12th grade in the areas of hip hop, jazz, salsa, and world dance. These genres are studied and then performed at the end of each semester.
