Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine Staff is available to all student athletes for prevention, evaluation, and treatment of athletic injuries. The Athletic Training Room is fully equipped with various modalities and rehabilitation equipment. The Athletic Training staff works closely with local physicians and physical therapists to provide comprehensive medical care for Mountain View Student-Athletes.
The Mountain View High School Sports Medicine Club is part of an extensive health career education program. Introduction to Health Occupations, Health Occupations (Nursing), Fitness Specialist, and Sports Medicine. The MVHS Sports Medicine Program provides academic/practical skills for students considering careers in athletic training, medicine, physical therapy, or other related careers. The Fitness Specialist Program is designed for students considering careers in the fitness industry and prepares them for national personal trainer certifications. Athletic Training Room

Purpose of the Athletic Training Room and the MVHS Sports Medicine Staff
Athletic Trainers (ATC) are licensed allied health professional who, under a physician’s directions, carry out the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries. This includes assisting in developing preventative conditioning programs, providing appropriate acute care for athletic injuries, arranging for appropriate physician evaluation & diagnosis, and providing or coordinating follow-up treatments & rehabilitation as necessary for all injuries sustained by athletes in the program.
The Athletic Training Room (ATR) is a health care facility. It is not to be used as a lounge or meeting place. All athletes are expected to comply with the rules for use of the facility posted both inside and outside of the Athletic Training Room.


Each athlete has the right of confidentiality. Information on their medical condition should be shared sparingly, on a “Need to Know” basis. If there is any question, the MVHS Sports Medicine Staff will determine what information should be shared, and with whom.

Policies & Procedures

It is the athlete’s responsibility to report all injuries and/or illnesses to either the MVHS Sports Medicine Staff and/or Coach as soon as possible. In event of an Emergency, the MVHS Sports Medicine Staff will:
  • notify parents/guardian
  • call the paramedics in the event that a parent or guardian cannot be reached
  • call the paramedics when the injury is limb/life threatening, then call the parent/guardian



  • if an athlete is under the care of a physician, the physician shall determine the availability of the athlete. Under no circumstances shall the coach allow the athlete to participate without specific direction from the sports medicine staff. A “No-Play” decision by the physician will always be followed.
  • if an athlete is NOT under the care of a physician, the responsibility regarding the availability of an athlete for participation rests with the MVHS Sports Medicine Staff.
Mountain View High School Athletics will follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines for head injuries/concussions. These guidelines will be discussed with the athlete, parents, and coaches per incident.
Athletes must report to the Athletic Training Room 35 minutes before the team starts practice for taping and/or treatment. There will be no taping “Just for Games.” If the athlete does not get taped everyday, the MVHS Sports Medicine Staff has the right to refuse taping the athlete on game days, unless an injury has occurred during the game. There is also a no Spatting (taping on the outside of the shoes) for any sport.
Hours: The Athletic Training Room will be open from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on regular school days. There will be coverage for every home event. The a MVHS Sports Medicine Staff member will travel with Junior Varsity and Varsity Football. On non-school days, the Athletic Training Room will be open based on practice/game schedules.
Medication Policy: It is the policy of Mountain View High School that the administration of medication, or supervision of self-medication to students during regular school hours should be discouraged unless necessary to maintain the student in school or in the event of an emergency.
No school personnel shall administer to any student, nor shall any student possess or consume any prescription or non-prescription (over the counter) medication.

Athletic Participation & Physicals

Athletic Participation & Physicals

The athletic program is an integral part of the total educational process of Mountain View High School, unique in its potential to promote the health and development of character of each participant through the values of self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, time management skills, high academic standards, fair play and ethical behavior, and overall commitment to personal excellence. The student athlete should present the highest quality of individual behavior, whether on or off campus. The coach recognizes the purpose of the program as being one of promoting the physical, mental, ethical, social and emotional well being of the student with whom he/she comes into contact. The coach is also responsible for encouraging the development of leadership and the ideals of fair play and sportsmanship. The coach is concerned about the welfare of the individual more than the results of any contest. The coaches encourage participation in all three seasons of sport (fall, winter, spring) without individual sport restrictions or pressures.
Athletes are expected to follow all school rules and regulations. Mountain View High School and the State of California eligibility rule demands that all athletes must have a minimum 2.0 G.P.A. at the end of the previous grading period of his/her first sport. If the student is below a 2.0 G.P.A. he/she will not be allowed to play. The athlete must also be enrolled in five classes and pass 20 semester credits. All athletes must have a yearly physical exam and have insurance. School insurance can be purchased through the bookkeeper's office.
A current health exam (dated less than one year prior to the start of school) and a copy of updated immunizations record, is required for all student athletes. This must be on file in the Athletic Office by the start of each sport.
The examining physician/nurse practitioner must sign and date the MVHS Athletic Participation & Physical Form (page 2). See Resource files at bottom of page to download this form.
If the student is required to have a physical exam in the year that coincides with a sports physical, then the physical exam will be accepted as an athletic physical if the statement regarding participation in interscholastic sports is completed by the examiner.

Please make sure both the student and the parent/guardian completely fill out the emergency card and the participation form. It is the athlete's responsibility to turn in the participation form to his or her coach by the first official practice of the season.
Please Keep A Copy For Your Records!!!
The health exam must include all required immunizations. At a minimum this includes:
  • 1 Current Td or Tdap vaccine (within the past 10 years)
  • 3 DPT vaccines (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus)
  • 3 OPV or 3 IPV (polio)
  • 2 MMR vaccines (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • 3 Hepatitis B vaccines
  • Proper documentation: month, day, and year for each dose administered is required.
Medical Exemption: a statement from a physician indicating that the immunization in question is medically contraindicated. A current medical objection letter must be on file in the Wellness Office by August 1st or within 30 days of enrollment for transfer-in students.
Religious Exemption: a letter dated and signed by the parents detailing their religious belief which forbids the specific (name the vaccine\s) immunization. Standardized forms are not acceptable. All letters will be reviewed by the local school authority. A current religious objection letter must be on file in the Athletic Office by August 1st or within 30 days of enrollment for transfer-in students.

The Mountain View High School Athletic Training Staff welcomes you and your team to Mountain View for your upcoming athletic event.  Please use the following information as needed before and during your travel.
Services Provided
The Following services will be provided during your visit:
  • An Athletic Trainer has been assigned to each sport and will be available to your team before, during and after the athletic events.
  • The Athletic Trainer will be on site for the events and a team physician will also be either on site or on call.
  • You will have access to out Athletic Training Rooms two hours prior to events time for any and all taping and treatment needs.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are traveling without a certified athletic trainer and/or athletic training student, please call the MVHS Sports Medicine Department to make necessary arrangements.  If you have any special requests, do not hesitate to contact us. Good luck with your upcoming season and we hope you enjoy your stay in Mountain View.
