Course Information Sheets

Academic Communication is a program that strives to address the learning needs of students whose primary deficit is in the area of social cognition. This program is designed to provide small-group instruction and case management to support student welfare, success, and achievement at Mountain View High School.

This is a special day class for students who are in the Exceptional Support Needs (ESN) program. Students will explore and be exposed to essential algebraic concepts and practical life skills in mathematics. Group and individual activities will focus on applying basic math skills to real-world situations, with an emphasis on money management, budgeting, solving word problems, and telling time.

This is a special day class for students who are in the Exceptional Support Needs (ESN) program. Students will be exposed to foundational concepts in Life Sciences, including biology and major body systems such as the musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and reproductive systems. The course will also incorporate life skills by exploring basic cooking techniques, emphasizing the science behind nutrition, food safety, and how the body processes what we eat.

This is a special day class for students who are in the Exceptional Support Needs (ESN) program. Students will be exposed to basic civics and economics concepts. Topics will include government at the federal, state, and local levels, current events, foundations of the US political system, democracy, economics, and how they work in everyday life (goods and services), and how they influence the choices we make.

This is a special day class for students who are in the Exceptional Support Needs (ESN) program. With the use of Unique Learning and teacher-made materials, students will work individually, in small groups, and as a whole class to develop functional reading, vocabulary, spelling, and written expression skills. We will use assistive technology and computer-based reading programs to support learning.

Students will prepare for Algebra I in the mainstream. Students will learn concepts involving number sense, order of operations, expressions, solving 1- and 2-step equations, inequalities, coordinate planes, and functions. Students will develop a strong understanding of foundational Algebra skills.

Students will bridge access in preparation for Algebra I in the mainstream. Learning focus will be on number sense, order of operations, expressions, solving 1- and 2-step equations, inequalities, coordinate planes, and functions, slope and slope-intercept form, systems of equations, rational numbers, reading data and statistics, and geometry foundations. Students will develop a strong understanding of foundational Algebra skills.

Students will be given the opportunity to build their foundation of basic reading. They will work to develop and increase reading comprehension skills and understanding of key themes in selected grade-level novels. Students will develop and improve their vocabulary and academic language through daily assignments and class discussions. Students will develop their writing skills when writing literary analysis, argumentative, and research essays. Students will demonstrate effective speaking through presentations along with class discussions.

Essentials English III-IV teaches students the skills and strategies to read nonfiction texts, articles, novels, and essays in preparation for texts they will encounter at the college level. Emphasis is placed on literature that is diverse, culturally responsive, and engaging. Homework, class activities, discussions, reading assessments, and projects are designed to develop students’ language arts skills as well as to help them foster an appreciation for and confidence in reading. Students will be taught to write in a variety of modes, particularly those they will encounter at the college level. Students are also taught to express themselves orally through presentations, classroom discussions, and Socratic Seminars. The course teaches students to use technology in meaningful ways to gather, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize.

Learning Skills is a course designed to assist those students who are eligible for special education services. Students receive academic support for their general education classes from the Resource staff in a small group setting. Study Skills strategies such as organization, time management, and test-taking skills are emphasized. In addition, students are supported in their IEPs, essential life skills such as self-advocacy, confidence, responsibility, initiative, transition, and perseverance. Students will also utilize the Learning Skills period for pull-out of additional support services as indicated in their IEP’s.

This is a special day class for students who are in the Exceptional Support Needs (ESN) program. Students will be exposed to foundational concepts in Physical Sciences, including properties of matter, chemical reactions, forces and interactions, energy, waves, and electromagnetic radiation.

Study Skills is a course designed to assist those students who are eligible for special education services. Students receive academic support for their general education classes from the Resource staff in a small group setting. Study Skills strategies such as organization, time management, and test-taking skills are emphasized. In addition, students are supported in their IEPs, essential life skills such as self-advocacy, confidence, responsibility, initiative, transition, and perseverance. Students will also utilize the Study Skills period for pull-out of additional support services as indicated in their IEP’s.

They will also examine current global issues and connect them to their historical, geographical, political, and cultural contexts.
