Principal's Message

Hello Spartans:

Boy Soccer Team Game Tonight!

First, I would like to wish our Boys Soccer team the very best as they prepare to face #1 seed Everett Alvarez (Salinas) in the Division I CCS Championship match. This marks only the third time in MVHS Boys Soccer history that our team will compete for a CCS Championship — an incredible accomplishment. The game will be played at Stevens Stadium / Buck Shaw Field at Santa Clara University at 7:30 p.m.

This championship game is especially meaningful for Mrs. McGuirk, one of our Assistant Principals who supports our current freshmen, and Mr. McGuirk, who retired from MVHS last year after many years of teaching and coaching in the program. Watching their senior son, Patrick McGuirk, take the field alongside his teammates makes this moment even more special for their family and for our school community.

We are proud of our team and wish them the very best on this historic night. Go Spartans! #SpartyUp

Author Visit

I want to thank Ms. Wu and Ms. Kemos for their tireless effort in organizing the 2026 Book Project - a collaboration between the MVHS Library and the MVHS English Department! I also want to thank our teachers for “sharing” their 9th graders to participate in this exciting opportunity. As a former English teacher, I was so touched by the support from our staff members.

As part of the project, every 9th grader received a copy Everything We Never Had by National Book Award nominee Randy Ribay.  These books were purchased as part of a collaborative literacy initiative supported by a MVLA Innovative Grant, MVLA Ed Services, Bookshop Santa Cruz, MVHS PTSA, and the site administration.

This semester opened with a new all-9th grade curriculum built around this incredible Filipino American story, and the unit concludes with a visit by the author, Randy Ribay.

I was so honored to receive a signed copy of his book from him, and our students enjoyed hearing from him, asking questions, and sharing their favorite characters with him.

While we have so many people to thank, I want to thank the MVLA Foundation and the PTSA for their continued support for our students.

Congratulations to Emerson Su, who won a Silver Key Scholastic Award!

One of our wonderful student artist, Emerson Su has been taking her AP3D work on the road this winter. Her work has been selected for the juried Art Now! show in Los Gatos; she has won a "Silver Key" Scholastic Art Award; and her dress piece, titled "Weight of Wishes | 盼愿 的重量" will be featured at an upcoming CCA art event.

Emerson writes:

I built this piece because I love to create, even if that means many late nights, hundreds of folded fans, and more than a few paper cuts with fellow MVHS students. I wanted to compose something where I could explore what being Asian American means to me and what it means to dream. While the garment is shaped like an American wedding dress, it is made from Chinese red envelopes that symbolize protection and blessings. Inside the folded fans are written wishes from individuals and communities who often feel unseen. Together, the dress holds my Asian American identity, wishes for the future, and my community’s dreams.

Congratulations to Viddy Vivekkumar!

One of our students, Viddy, scored in the top 4% of more than 6000 students from across the country on the USA Biology Olympiad Open Exam!  He will next compete in the semifinal exam in March. Good luck, Viddy! I also want to thank Mr. Cmaylo for his continued support for our students.

TEDx Videos now available!

In case you missed the TEDx event in January or were so impressed by the talks, you are in luck! Special thanks to Parth Agarwala and Räfael Rousseau for filming and editing and Natalie Chen and Veda Mungara for leading our team this year. I want to thank all the speakers, and Ms. Reid for her support for our students.

Wrestling Updates

Below is an update from our amazing Wrestling Program. I thank Coach Nguyen and the parent volunteers for their support for our wrestlers!

This past weekend at the CCS Masters Championships in Watsonville, our Spartan Wrestling program made school history. Of the 11 student-athletes who qualified — 8 girls and 3 boys — seven earned medals, and two are advancing to the CIF State Championships💛🖤

As a team, we placed 9th overall out of 92 schools, a testament to the belief, culture, and hard work driving this program forward. We are proud to see Spartans across all grade levels on the podium, representing our school with resilience and leadership.

CCS Masters Medalists
Boys: Justice Commendatore (5th), James Cunningham (6th), Chris Green (6th)
Girls: Liberty Evans (2nd, State Qualifier), Kiana Lien (3rd, State Qualifier), Emeline Zuber (5th), Raven Rasmussen (6th)

Special recognition to Kiana Lien, now a three-time CIF State qualifier, and Liberty Evans, who earned her first state berth. Both will represent Mountain View High School in Bakersfield this weekend.

We are also proud to share that both our boys’ and girls’ teams placed 1st in the CCS Academic Achievement Award, earning the highest combined GPA among their peers in 92 schools — a true reflection of excellence in the classroom and on the mat.

Congratulations to our wrestlers, coaches, and families on this historic showing. The climb is real — and we’re just getting started. 💛

One last reminder, I hope to see you at the soccer game!

Thank you,

Kip Glazer Ed.D.
